Your School's AI Lab Can't Stop at Class 8. Here's What CBSE Has Planned for Class 9-10

A CBSE principal in Nashik told us last month that her school's WhatsApp groups had been on fire for two weeks straight. AI is now a subject. Three languages are compulsory. Maths has two levels. Somebody's cousin heard the board exam changes next year. Somebody else heard 2029.

Nobody in the group had actually read a circular. They were reading each other's summaries of summaries.

We don't blame them. If you have only been following the headlines, CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum overhaul looks like one enormous, undifferentiated wave of change. But if you actually sit down with the primary documents, as we did for this piece, a much clearer and more useful picture emerges, particularly for what happens in Classes 9 and 10. And it matters, because most schools that built an AI lab for their junior classes this year have not thought past Class 8 at all.

That gap is what this post is about.

Two Different Things Are Being Called "AI in Class 9-10." They Are Not the Same

Here is the confusion at the root of most of those WhatsApp threads. CBSE has actually had an AI programme in Classes 9 and 10 since 2019. It is Subject Code 417, an elective skill subject. In the 2024-25 academic session, roughly 7.9 lakh students across 4,538 schools opted into it. That sounds like a lot until you remember there are over 30,000 CBSE-affiliated schools in India. Most schools simply never offered it.

What launched this year is a different animal. Circular Acad-15/2026, dated April 1, 2026, brought Computational Thinking (CT) and AI into Classes 3 to 8 as a compulsory, non-elective part of the curriculum. That part is already live for the 2026-27 session, and if your school has an AI lab running for junior classes, you are almost certainly responding to this circular.

The part almost nobody has explained clearly is what happens next. According to CBSE's own curriculum roadmap and statements from the board's Director of Academics, CT and AI arrives as a compulsory module in Classes 9 and 10 starting the 2027-28 academic session. It is internally assessed at first, layered on top of (not replacing) the existing elective. Then, for the cohort currently in Class 6, AI becomes a compulsorily board-examined subject when that batch reaches Class 10, in 2029.

So three separate things, three separate years. Miss that distinction and you will either panic about a deadline that is not yet here or, worse, assume you have more time than you actually do.

The Real Timeline, Laid Out Plainly

We built this table by cross-referencing CBSE's Circular Acad-15/2026, Circular Acad-18/2026, and the board's public statements at the Class 9-10 curriculum launch in April 2026. Most of what circulates about this topic online cites none of the primary documents, which is why the numbers you have probably seen vary from source to source.

  • 2026-27: Compulsory CT and AI begins for Classes 3 to 8. Fifty hours a year at the preparatory stage (Classes 3-5), delivered inside Maths. One hundred hours a year at the middle stage (Classes 6-8), split across CT, AI literacy, and projects. No board exam at this stage. Existing Class 9 AI elective courses under the old scheme are discontinued for the incoming batch.
  • 2027-28: CT and AI becomes a compulsory module for Classes 9 and 10, assessed internally through school-based assessment, not yet a board paper. Textbooks are already being readied for this rollout, according to CBSE's Director of Academics.
  • 2029: The first cohort to have gone through compulsory CT and AI since Class 6 reaches Class 10, and sits a compulsorily board-examined AI paper for the first time.

Put a face on that timeline and it gets sharper. A student in Class 6 this year is your 2029 board exam candidate. A student in Class 3 this year has never known a school year without formal AI education, and will spend all ten years of it inside a single, evolving CBSE framework.

That is not a distant policy conversation. That is a Class 6 student sitting in your school right now.

Why a Class 3-8 Lab Alone Leaves a Real Gap

Here is where we see schools get this wrong most often, and it is an honest mistake. A school builds an AI and robotics lab to satisfy the Classes 3-8 mandate, treats it as a compliance project, ticks the box, and moves on. Reasonable, given how the last few months have felt.

But think about what that student experiences. Five to six years of structured, hands-on AI exposure through Class 8. Then, unless the school has planned ahead, a cliff. No continuity into Class 9. No lab-based curriculum to carry that learning into the compulsory module arriving in 2027-28. The student who was building basic classification models in Class 8 is suddenly back to worksheets and theory, right when CBSE's own curriculum is asking for the opposite.

And in engineering, you learn quickly that a system designed in disconnected phases with no continuity between them is not really a system at all. It is a series of patches. A curriculum is no different. If Classes 3-8 and Classes 9-10 are built by two different vendors, on two different platforms, with two different pedagogical philosophies, the student pays for that seam.

Not because continuity is a nice-to-have. Because CBSE's own roadmap, from 2026-27 through 2029, is itself one continuous pathway. A school's lab strategy should match the shape of the mandate it is responding to.

What Schools Should Actually Be Doing Now, Not in 2027

We get asked, often by Academic Directors who have already handled the Class 3-8 rollout, whether it is too early to think about Class 9-10. It is not. Here is what we would tell a school walking into this today.

Audit what your Class 8 students are actually learning right now, and ask whether it feeds anywhere. If your current AI programme was built purely to satisfy the 2026-27 circular for junior classes, check whether the vendor or curriculum even extends into secondary school. Many do not, because many vendors built quickly for the immediate mandate and stopped there.

Look at teacher capacity honestly. CT and AI at the middle stage already requires a computer teacher for AI literacy alongside subject teachers for CT. The 2027-28 module for Classes 9-10 will demand more depth, not less. A teacher shortage in specialised subjects that is manageable at the worksheet-and-projects level in Class 6 becomes a real constraint when Class 9 students need to work through data literacy, AI ethics, and applied programming.

Talk to your trustees now about budget and infrastructure, not in 2027 when the deadline is close. Schools that treat this as a rolling, multi-year commitment tend to negotiate better terms with partners and avoid the scramble that hits every vendor's calendar the year before a mandate takes effect.

And resist the instinct to solve this in isolation from the Composite Skill Lab mandate and the new compulsory vocational education requirements also arriving in this same curriculum window. CBSE is not asking schools to build three unrelated things. It is asking for one coherent skills infrastructure, and the schools that plan for it that way will spend less, not more.

How This Fits Into the Bigger Picture

The board built this as a phased rollout on purpose. A school that treats each phase separately will end up rebuilding its lab strategy every two years. A school that treats it as one continuous curriculum, the way CBSE itself designed it, builds once and adapts.

That is the whole argument for a partnership model over a one-time vendor purchase. Hardware bought in 2026 to satisfy a Class 6-8 requirement has no natural upgrade path into a 2027-28 module unless someone planned for it from day one. A partnership that scales with the student, not just the circular, does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI compulsory for Class 9 CBSE students right now?

Cost varies widely depending on whether a school buys hardware outright or partners with a provider on a zero-cost, revenue-share model. Schools evaluating this should look closely at what an AI lab actually costs under each approach before committing.

The WhatsApp group in Nashik eventually got its answer, and it was simpler than anyone expected. Nothing is due tomorrow. But the students who will sit that 2029 board exam are already in your classrooms, and the curriculum decisions a school makes this year will shape whether those students arrive at Class 9 ready, or starting over.
