In March 2026, the Thane Municipal Corporation put robotic coding and AI labs for 60 of its schools into its proposed budget. The same report said the administration wants municipal education to be a competitive alternative to private schooling.
Read that twice if you run a private school in Thane or Navi Mumbai. An AI lab for schools in Thane is no longer something you announce at an open house and watch parents applaud. It is becoming the baseline. So the real question is not whether to get a lab. It is who runs it, who pays for it and what happens when the novelty wears off. Here are the questions we would ask before signing anything.
Why are Thane's municipal schools getting AI labs?
Start with what is on paper. The Thane proposal covers 60 schools for robotic coding and AI labs, plus 62 "Model Schools" with a ₹50 crore allocation. Kalyan-Dombivli's 2025-26 budget set aside ₹3 crore for AI robotics labs in municipal schools. And Thane announced its first CBSE municipal school, in Kharegaon, run with Crystal House India. It is free from pre-primary to Class 12 and starts with Nursery to Class 2. Note that the lab plans are a proposal, so watch for what actually gets built.
Those schools serve different families from yours, and we wish them well. But parents compare. A parent who hears that a municipal school has an AI lab will ask what the private school down the road does with its fee.
Here is our worry. A lab room is the easy part. Labs sold as boxes of kits tend to go quiet within two or three years, and we have written about why school robotics labs go dark. For a CBSE school the stakes are higher still. CT and AI is now part of Classes 3 to 8 from 2026-27, so a lab without delivery capacity is a compliance gap, not just an admissions problem.
What is changing for schools in Navi Mumbai, Ulwe and Panvel?
The new airport changed the map. Navi Mumbai International Airport began commercial flights on 25 December 2025, and developers have been adding housing around Ulwe and Panvel. New families need schools. New schools are opening.
That matters for two kinds of principal. If you run a new school in the south, CBSE's affiliation process now includes physical inspection, which makes a compliant Composite Skill Lab a precondition rather than a three-year runway. We explain why in our guide to new CBSE affiliation and the Composite Skill Lab. And if you run an established school in Nerul, Vashi or Kharghar, expect more choice for parents nearby. We would not wait to see how that plays out.
Which AI lab fits a CBSE, ICSE, IB or State Board school in MMR?
Not the same one. Navi Mumbai's school listings include CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB and State Board schools across Nerul, Vashi, Kharghar, Sanpada, Kopar Khairane, Airoli and Panvel. A single pitch cannot fit all of them.
- CBSE: the CT and AI curriculum for Classes 3 to 8 plus the Composite Skill Lab. See our page on AI labs for CBSE schools.
- ICSE and ISC: a different syllabus and assessment pattern, covered on our ICSE schools page.
- IB and IGCSE: inquiry-led programmes that need projects rather than worksheets. Start with our IB schools page.
- Maharashtra State Board: the move toward a CBSE pattern changes your lab plan, which we cover in what the State Board shift means for school lab plans.
Six questions MMR principals should ask before signing an AI lab vendor
We have a general checklist in how to choose a Composite Skill Lab setup company. These six are specific to Thane and Navi Mumbai.
1. Who is the on-campus engineer, and where do they live? A lab runs on a person. Not a box. Ask for a name, a base location, how many schools that person covers and what happens on the days they are away. Anyone who has driven from Thane to Vashi at nine in the morning knows why this matters. Ask us the same question. You should get the answer in writing.
2. What happens to the equipment in July? Every MMR school knows the monsoon: humidity, power cuts, the occasional leaking roof. Electronics do not enjoy any of them. Ask where equipment is stored, what backup power the lab needs, and who pays when a board gets damp. In our model, maintenance and hardware upgrades are included year-round, so replacements are not a line item for the school.
3. How much room do you actually need? Many MMR campuses are compact. Ask for the exact floor area, number of power points, ventilation and storage in writing. A vendor who needs a room you do not have is selling you a construction project. We look at this trade-off in our guide to setting up a zero cost AI lab in Mumbai schools.
4. What will parents pay, and who signs off? Under the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Regulation of Fee) Act, 2011, fee proposals go through a Parent Teacher Association, and the state has said it plans to tighten the rules on extra charges. So a vendor who says the fee is not your problem is not paying attention. Ask for the fee in rupees per student per month, ask how it moves through PTA approval, and take your own legal advice before you commit.
5. What does the contract say if the lab underperforms? Ask about exit terms, who owns the equipment after the term ends, and whether the school's earnings are guaranteed or merely projected. Most vendors sell hardware and leave. That is not a partnership. That is a transaction. Our post on what happens after the vendor leaves lists the clauses to read twice.
6. Can I stand in a lab that is running today? Visit one. Talk to the principal. Watch a session. We are early, and we will tell you plainly which labs are live and which are still in the pipeline. A vendor who cannot show you a running lab should say so too.
What does a zero cost AI lab look like on a Thane or Navi Mumbai campus?
Here is how our model works. We fund and deploy the entire lab on your campus, and your school pays ₹0 for setup. A technology integration fee is added to your existing fee structure, alongside tuition and activity fees. The school collects it and keeps a fixed profit margin per student, guaranteed in the contract. An on-campus engineer, a working professional rather than a visiting trainer, runs every session. Maintenance and upgrades are included. Deployment takes 45 days from partnership confirmation.
Is it right for every school? No. It suits schools that want the lab to pay for itself and that are happy to involve their PTA early. If you want to see the numbers, the school financial model shows what a school keeps, and how the lab works walks through a typical week. Schools that join us now get founding partner status, which means direct access to our engineering team and room to customise the curriculum. Our Thane and Navi Mumbai page has the local details.
A 90-day plan for a Thane or Navi Mumbai principal
If you start this week, you can have a decision by the end of January.
Weeks 1 to 2. Write down what you actually have: your board, the rooms you could spare and whether any lab already exists. If you are a CBSE school, check your position against the Composite Skill Lab compliance checklist.
Weeks 3 to 4. Raise the fee question informally with your PTA chair. Ask what parents would want to see in return for a technology integration fee. Their answer will shape everything that follows.
Weeks 5 to 8. Send the six questions above, in writing, to two or three vendors. Visit at least one lab that is running today.
Weeks 9 to 12. Put the written answers side by side, take legal advice on the fee and decide. Parents who tour your campus next year should see a plan with a start date, not an intention.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best AI lab for schools in Thane?
There is no single answer, because it depends on your board, your room and your timetable. Compare vendors on who runs the lab after installation, what the contract guarantees and whether you can visit a live lab. The hardware list matters least.
Does a CBSE school in Thane need a Composite Skill Lab?
Yes. The Composite Skill Lab is a CBSE requirement for affiliated schools, and the deadline is 22 August 2027. Our month-by-month deadline plan shows how to work backwards from it.
How long does it take to set up an AI lab in a school?
In our model, deployment takes 45 days from partnership confirmation. Ask any vendor for the same number in writing, and ask what is included in it.
Can a compact campus in Vashi or Kopar Khairane fit a lab?
Possibly, but it depends on the room. Ask the vendor to walk your campus before quoting, and get the floor area, power and ventilation needs in writing.
Will parents in Navi Mumbai pay a technology integration fee?
Parents respond to visible projects and a clear fee process. Under Maharashtra's fee law the PTA is part of the approval, so involve it early and show what students will build.
Do not copy the municipal plan. Beat its delivery.
Back to Thane's 60 proposed labs. They tell us that a lab is becoming ordinary, and ordinary things stop winning admissions. What will still stand out is a lab that runs every week, taught by someone who builds real systems for a living, with a fee your PTA understands.
So ask the six questions. Ask us too. And if you would like to test them against your own campus, we are glad to sit down with your floor plan and your fee structure.
